Why We Coach

For those of you who have coached at any level know that, we as coaches do not coach for the money. The countless amount of hours needed to run a program, to build relationships, to manage team practices and competitive games over shadows any amount of stipend that can be offered. Don't get me wrong, I do appreciate what is given to me, however, at this level you will rarely see coaches doing it for the money.

For myself, there is no greater satisfaction knowing that I was able to help a young woman or man achieve their goals on and off the basketball court, teach responsibility, respect, class, and commitment to an idea, philosophy, and team. In my eight years of coaching, I have been blessed to have coached some great kids, some of whom I am in contact with. Some of my players are overseas in Japan, and some of them are just around the corner. It has been a pleasure to have coached every single one of them. In reading some of my players thoughts, it reminds me why I coach the game of basketball at this level.

"We had a strong bond like a family. It could never be replaced."

"The coaching staff was great. I will never forget my senior year playing for this team. The chemistry with the coaching staff and the team just clicked. Our team had fun but at the same time we were all about business. I will never forget this experience."

"ONE TEAM. ONE LOVE. ONE FAMiLY! Well my experience with the Helen Bernstien Boys Basketball program was a hell of a journey. It was hard and challenging but at the same time I gained more knowledge and more understanding of the game of basketball. It took a lot of guts, pride, commitment and passion to be part of this program. As for me, Coach Bugarin and Coach Barnes weren’t only coaches on the basketball court but they were also my mentors, and father figures off the court as well. They were always there for me when I needed them; lifting me up when I was down, giving me advice when I was going through rough times, supporting me and showing me love. And for that I will always remember them and have respect for them."
